Boats Without a Country

April 4, 2020

Much like us, but worse off, are a bunch of boats without a country, headed from the Panama Canal towards French Polynesia. Here’s what the migration looks like today on Marine Traffic…

French Polynesia has made it very clear they are closed to visiting yachts. Those who arrive are directed to go straight to Tahiti without passing go – and no $200. From Tahiti, they can sail on (to where – all cruising destinations have closed borders?), or leave their boat and fly home (on what flights?). While in Tahiti, the curfew is from 8 PM to 5 AM and they are only allowed to leave their boats for essentials. All watersports are banned, including swimming.
