Wild Times with Granite is the title of one of my favorite books (more on that below) as well as a great title for a blog post about our visit to Flinders Island, with it’s huge, exposed granite boulders on the island’s wild shoreline. As if the boulders aren’t spectacular enough, the ones just above the waterline are covered in bright orange lichen. The center of Flinders island has towering granite cliffs, striated with different colors. In between the boulders, there are pristine beaches and great wildlife.

As for Wild Times with Granite, the book…
This really is one of my favorite books. It’s about a young girl growing up in a timeless and placeless setting while facing dangers that may or may not be real.
At almost 60 years old, sometimes I feel I’ve already read every possible story. Nope. This one is different – brilliantly creative and beautifully written. The author is also one of our fellow cruisers: Gail Varga. Here’s a link to the book on Amazon so you can help support this cruiser/artist.
A personal note: While I’ve always craved comfort and safety, I’ve also worried about the negative effect they can have on my life. Wild Times really got me thinking about this again and maybe helped me come to terms with some of the discomforts and frights of the cruising life.
