As we made our way to the west coast, we stopped near the town of Opononi for coffee and to look at the dunes across the harbor.
We had tried to make a reservation at neighboring town Omapere’s Copthorne hotel, but they were booked. Finding no last-minute cancellations, we decided we’d drive back to Opua after seeing the Kauri trees. It would be a long day, but we could be back before dark. This meant no lingering in Opononi, but there wasn’t much to see there anyway. –Cyndi
