Matangi

Matagi Island, Fiji

We found this surprisingly beautiful, especially considering the mixed reviews we’ve heard, including complaints that it’s rolly. We imagine it could be in a NE swell, but when we were there it was flat calm. Probably the most unique thing about this small island is that it looks remarkably like anchorages we’ve seen in New Zealand. This is not a bad thing: New Zealand is beautiful, but if you’re looking for long stretches of beach and palm trees, this is not the place. This is more like the inside of a sunken volcanic crater (which is probably exactly what it is) with steep rock walls covered with thick green bush. There is a small beach but it’s understandably reserved for couples staying at the Matangi Private Island Resort who are brought out here by boat for romantic day excursions. For everyone else there’s good snorkeling, although it has sustained some damage from Cyclone Winston.

Cruisers (adults only though) can book dinner at the resort on the other side of the island, and we did just that. Since there’s no direct access to the resort, we were supposed to be picked up in the anchorage and brought over there by panga. Alas, the resort called and said the boat driver was busy that night—could we anchor off the resort instead? We did that but have to say it was a little harrowing getting over there, and after having trouble finding a spot to anchor we asked if we could use one of their moorings. Thankfully they had one free and let us use it. The resort turned out to be really beautiful, definitely a special place worth visiting if you enjoy this sort of thing. The food was delicious, but I’d advise that they run somewhat on Fiji time; don’t expect dinner to be ready at the specified 7pm. No matter when the setting is this lovely! The food was delicious and it made for a great evening.
