March 3, 2013…
Our friend Tom asked about the boats we see here in New Zealand. Rather than go into a wordy description, I thought I’d just post pictures of some of them. Click the picture. Enjoy. -Rich
Looks like a cruiser. We don’t know them though.
I think this boat was in Tonga with us.
Sail.
Sail.
Metal, I think. At the fuel dock.
An interesting local boat. I don’t think I’d feel good about these windows offshore.
Most boats here are in great shape. A few, like this one, could use some TLC.
This fat girl is our boat, Legacy, from behind.
A local boat owned by a great guy named Neil. It’s probably for sale – designed by a famous Kiwi designer. It’s a really pretty boat.
Sail.
This steel boat was built by our friend Patrick. We met in Tonga.
Sail.
I really like the look of this boat. It’s for sale but it’s got a wood planked hull. That’s a deal-breaker for us.
We didn’t see many traditional looking boats out cruising.
Pretty.
Big.
Our friends’ boat, Sam. We met them in Tonga and sailed to NZ with them.
Nice traditional boat.
Another cat. This one might be a local boat.
There are a lot of boats built locally. I don’t know if this is one, but I suspect it is.
A Passport 40 like our friend Dean’s boat. We left for French Polynesia at the same time as Dean and his boat did really well!
There are more than a few multihulls out here but those of the differing religions (multihull, monohull and even power) have managed to behave well with just a little name-calling and not much bloodshed.
Our friend Steve’s boat, Dessolina. He single-handed her across the Pacific. He’s selling now and going back to land-life for a while.
I understand that this steel launch has quite a bit of history, starting out steam powered.
Another nice launch.
They call powerboats launches here. I think of a launch as looking more like this than a sportfisher, but here, they’re all launches.
There are a bunch of big sport fishers here. I guess that makes sense since the fishing is supposed to be great.
Here’s what looks to me to be an ocean-crossing powerboat. It looks like it at least came from Hawaii. Sorry I couldn’t get a better picture. I really like the look of this boat.
I love look of this workboat. I wonder if Cyndi and I wouldn’t be happier cruising around the oceans in something like this.
Enough said.
