Roulottes (food trucks) (Papeete, Tahiti, Society Islands)

July 11, 2012

In Papeete they have something called the Roulottes.  This is an area where most every night, food trucks park, set up and serve excellent food of all kinds and nationalities.  We went several times but we got stuck on the steak place where a very proud man in a white chef’s uniform grilled incredible meat.  His uniform was very traditional chef except for the red swim trunks and lack of long pants.  It was quite a sight from behind.  And, wow, were the steaks great.

Nelda, Sarah and Larry from Diamond Girl with me.  Cyndi behind camera, again.

Those beans were as good as they look and the brochettes were some of the best meat I’ve ever had.

And of course, poisson cru!

Supermarket, Really! (Papeete, Tahiti, Society Islands)

July 13, 2012

Within walking distance of the marina is the Carrefour supermarket.  It’s huge and the biggest market we’ve seen since California, by far!  It has everything and the prices aren’t bad either.

Wide isles, good produce, well, OK produce.

They carry many of the things we’re used to at home, or at least some variation of them.

The cheese was a highlight – great variety and good prices.

As we don’t have a freezer on board, the expansive frozen isle didn’t do us much good.

And after you’ve bought all you dare, they make it pretty easy to get your groceries home as there is a cart return right at the marina.  By a show of hands, how many of you have tried to push a full grocery cart over dirt pathways?

And I almost forgot, every trip to the market should start with a cappuccino and a croissant.  This cafe is right outside the front doors to the market.  Can you spot half of Legacy’s crew?  The other half is behind the camera, as usual.

Marina Taina Eateries (Papeete, Tahiti, Society Islands)

July 10 – 20, 2012

We lost quite a bit of weight sailing from California to French Polynesia.  Cyndi got too thin. Not to worry, the food at the eateries near the marina helped put some weight back on us.

Casa Bianca, the Italian restaurant at the end of our dock had great food in general and really great pizza!  Especially the pizza melazane with eggplant and Anaheim chilies.

And great cheeseburgers at the Pink Coconut.

And this is the view from the McDonald’s right next to the marina.  We ended up there about once a day for the soft-serve ice cream. -Rich
