Last Minute Preparations

May 21, 2013 in Tauranga, New Zealand

Lets go back in time a few days… We were planning to leave to sail to Fiji the next day.  (It turns out that the weather didn’t cooperate, so we’re still here, but that’s another story.) Our To-Do list was getting short but there were still some critical items.  It looked something like this…

That’s right – see a movie.  And that’s just what we did.  We should have been getting the boat ready but we noticed a movie called Kon Tiki playing at the theater we were walking by so we stopped.

What?  I was getting ready.  I checked the weather on my phone before the movie started. (Did I mention it was a very nice theater – they serve wine!).

I’m so glad we took the time to see Kon Tiki.  It was a really good movie.  I loved the book, and while it was a long time ago that I read it, I don’t think the movie did it complete justice, but it was really good.  I would sure recommend it.  It also happens to depict life at sea on Legacy very well! 😉 Rich

Fernland Spa Thermal Mineral Springs (Bay of Plenty, New Zealand)

May 20, 2013

Just outside of Tauranga are the hot springs at Fernland Spa. We decided to take a break from boat projects, weather worries, provisioning, and the increasing chill in the air and go sit in some hot pools.

We weren’t sure what to expect as we’ve never been to one of these hot springs places. What we found was beautifully lush and a little rustic. Overall it was a comfortable, low-key place and we liked it. We had a choice: the main pool or a private pool. Since the big pool looked a little crowded, we opted for a private pool. We were led to a room with its own hot tub under an open-air ceiling that gave it the feeling of being outdoors. Near the tub a shower head was mounted on the wall. Perfect!

It was lovely to just soak, run the jets, and not think about boat-related things for awhile. And since we’d thought to bring shampoo and soap, we had a nice shower, too. We left feeling totally relaxed and warmed from the inside out. Very worthwhile! –Cyndi

We Shall Stay

May 19, 2013 in Tauranga, New Zealand

The answer to the question in our previous post is that we shall stay – at least for a little while longer.  Each weather file we download looks a little worse than the last.  We’re going to play it safe and wait for the next, hopefully better, weather window.  Shucks – we have to stay in NZ a little longer.  Darn! 😉 Rich

Shall we stay or shall we go now…

Hey, those would make catchy lyrics, wouldn’t they?  Those words are our lives these past few days.  We have a weather window tomorrow for the 10 day sail to Fiji but more and more, it looks like we’ll get clobbered on Wednesday or Thursday.  Does it get better than this?  Will we get a better weather window?  We don’t really know.

If we leave tomorrow, this is about where we’d be Thursday morning, with 27 knot winds and 10+ foot seas.  Yuk.  -Rich
