As good as it felt to arrive in Savusavu a month ago, it now felt just as good to leave. The Cousteau anchorage is only a few miles away, but it felt worlds away. We’d decided to stop there for a night before heading on the next island and give ourselves an afternoon just to relax.
It was overcast but so humid that it was uncomfortably warm. It was going to be another hot day, but at least here we could get in the water. After a snack we got in the dinghy and headed over to Split Rock. After we jumped in we were instantly surrounded by fish. They seemed to recognize us now, and the sergeant fish actually followed us around. I love swimming around that beautiful chasm full of fish and sea fans, a magical world. Snorkeling here is such a treat!
After snorkeling we worked on cleaning the bottom of our boat which, after a month in Savusavu, had a fair amount of growth. It’s a good amount of work to clean the entire bottom, but being in the water today was a godsend.
When we came back, we showered then stayed below the rest of the afternoon. After all that time in the water, we remained cool. We knew that as warm as it was out here, it must be horribly hot in Savusavu, one of those challenging days. Later in the afternoon, we got a little rain and I was excited to hear some thunder, but it never did come our way. The theme of this month has been rain that hardly arrives, frustrating since it brings coolness and relief from the heat. We were glad to be heading south. –Cyndi
